57th Art Open Welcome Remarks
Good afternoon everyone,
On behalf of the Laurel Art Guild, it is truly a pleasure to welcome you to the 57th Open Juried Exhibition here at Montpelier Arts Center. Thank you to our artists, our juror, our partners, and our community for being part of this moment.
Each year, this exhibition reminds us that art is not simply something we display—it is something we build with. It is part of the cultural infrastructure that shapes how a community sees itself, how it tells its story, and how it imagines its future.
We are also living in a region that has evolved into a truly multinational and multicultural hub. That transformation brings an extraordinary richness of perspectives—different ways of seeing, interpreting, and expressing the world around us. Through the arts, those perspectives become visible, shared, and understood.
This diversity is not just something to celebrate—it is something to learn from. It expands our collective imagination and strengthens our ability to connect across experiences. In that sense, the arts become one of the most effective ways to cultivate human capital: by developing empathy, curiosity, and the capacity to engage with complexity.
And when those qualities take root, they contribute directly to what we might call civic wellness—the strength of a community to remain connected, expressive, and engaged across differences.
The artists represented here today each bring a distinct voice shaped by their own experiences and influences. Together, their work reflects not only individual expression, but the broader, evolving identity of our community and its place in the world.
We are grateful to Montpelier Arts Center for providing a space where this exchange can happen, and to all of you for showing up to support it.
Please take your time with the work, engage with the artists, and enjoy the exhibition.
Thank you, and welcome.
